Minister of the Interior Koscialkowski today finally ordered the dissolution of the Lodz Municipal Council. The action was the culmination of a long series of anti-Jewish and anti-government developments marked by attacks against Jewish councillors and the voting down of the city budget by the Council’s National Democratic Party’s majority.
Threats to dissolve the Lodz Municipal Council have been made several times in recent months. The National Democratic Party (Endeks) in addition to being anti-Semitic is also opposed to the present regime in Poland.
RIOT IN MAY 29
Clashes between them and Jewish councillors have been frequent. On May 29, the Endek councillors attacked the Jewish members of the council with inkwells and pieces of furniture. A bloody riot resulted in which several Jewish councillors were injured, one of them severely. The police finally had to intervene to restore order.
The riot started when one of the councillors shouted “Down with the Polish Hitlerites.” Socialist councillors were also the butt of this attack.
In voting against the municipal budget the Endek aldermen had declared that they were doing so for anti-Semitic reasons.
