A decision of great significance to the Yidcish schools in various towns in Poland was adopted yesterday by the Warsaw City Council.
The City Council confirmed the decision of the Education Commission, recommending to the City Government to grant the Yiddish schools in Warsaw full recognition similar to that granted to the public schools maintained by the Government. The Commission also voted to grant from the City funds a subsidy to the Yiddish schools on the basis of 40 zlotys per capita for each pupil attending the school. According to an estimate this per capita contribution will amount to 80,000 zlotys annually instead of the 15,000 zlotys granted to the schools hitherto. The Commission also voted to pay out the difference for the school year in 1927-1928.
The decision of the Warsaw City Council is considered here a great victory for the Yiddish school system in Poland as it will no doubt be emulated by the other municipalities in Poland.
The Yiddish School Organization, the central body of the Yiddish school system, adopted a resolution expressing thanks to Mr. Alter, representative of the Jewish Labor Party Bund on the Warsaw City Council, who sponsored this proposal in the City Council.
