Civil libertarians are criticizing a Virginia high school that asked Protestant ministers to teach a course on the history of Western religions. A spokesman for the American Civil Liberties Union said the proposed optional course appeared to be a way “to circumvent the separation of church and state” as well as a way “to impose the Bible on students.” A representative for the school district said if any of the ministers began to preach, they would be taken out of the classroom.
