The refusal of the York Township to give the Gael Tzedek Congregation permission to build a synagogue has brought protests from various liberal organizations. The Association for Civil Liberties in a letter to the town defended the right of any religious body to build a house of worship in Canada.
“We would also remind your council that should it maintain this refusal and at some future date grant permission to any other religious body to occupy premises in York Township for purposes of worship, it will be impossible to regard its action in any other light than as a discrimination against the particular religion professed by the Gael Tzedek Synagogue,” the letter added.
