A group of Israelis demanding an end to “religious bigotry” in questions pertaining to marriage announced today that its members would petition the Knesset on Nov. 9 to institute civil marriage in Israel. The Public Committee for Civil Marriage has designated that date “Mamzer Day” to focus attention on the plight of a brother and sister who were denied marriage licenses because the religious authorities consider them “mamzers” (illegitimate). The Committee is a recently formed non-partisan body which cooperates with the League Against Religious Coercion.
