Clashes continued today in Haifa between striking Israeli seamen and volunteer workers, while in Tel Aviv port laborers declared a one-hour strike to express solidarity with the seamen.
A street demonstration in support of the striking seamen was held here last night, arranged by the pro-Communist Mapam party. Police who attempted to arrest Abraham Shlonsky, well-known Israeli poet, on the charge of “participating and addressing an illegal demonstration,” were prevented from doing so by several hundred demonstrators. Unable to detain him on the spot, the police arrested Mr. Shlonsky later at his home.
