The Jewish Emigration Organization Hicem (Hias-Ica-Emigdirekt) has learned from its committee in Montevideo that the President of the Republic of Uruguay has promulgated the law suspending immigration into the country for the duration of one year.
The law will enter into force on September 20.
Under this law, admission into Uruguay will be prohibited to all foreigners travelling second or third class, with the intention of settling in the country.
The text of the law does not make it possible to foresee how it will affect the admission of wives and children coming to rejoin their husbands and parents, it is stated.
The National Council is authorized to admit into the country, as exceptions, expert workmen engaged by contract, on condition that it is established that their work is essential.
The law leaves it to the Senate to determine which categories of workers are to be regarded as useful to the country.
