Joe Schechter, eldest of four brothers accused by the federal government of conspiring to violate the NRA live poultry code, yesterday declared in Brooklyn Federal Court that Leroy Peterson, code supervisor, had “lied like a race horse” while testifying against the defendants.
Schechter, who was sole owner of the Schechter Live Poultry Market, at 991 Rockaway avenue, and who guaranteed the accounts of the A. L. A. Schechter Live Poultry Market, owned by his brothers, Aaron, Alex and Martin, testified that he had no interest in the latter firm. Under cross-examination, however, he admitted he had bought poultry for the A. L. A. market and is now partner in that concern.
Assistant Attorney General Walter L. Rice and Joseph Heller, defense attorney, probably will sum up today and the case will be sent to the jury this afternoon, it was indicated.
