Horace R. Cohen was yesterday elected president of the District Grand Lodge No. 1, B’nai B’rith, at the eighty-second annual convention which is in session here. He is the first Canadian to hold that post.
Mr. Cohen is the son of Lyon Cohen, communal leader. His grandfather, the late Lazarus Cohen, was among the founders of the Montreal B’nai B’rith.
Delegates to the convention heard the report submitted by former president Frank Goldman, of Lowell, Mass., regarding the efforts to form a joint council of the American Jewish Committee, American Jewish Congress and B’nai B’rith, for the purpose of making representations in Washington on behalf of a more liberal interpretation of immigration laws. The aim of these representations is to facilitate the entry of German refugees, render relief to German Jews and in connection with anti-defamation activities.
Joseph Cohen, member of the Provincial Legislature, greeted the convention. He stated that the Province of Quebec has the unique distinction of having been the first to grant Jews equal rights over 100 years ago, adding that the anti-Semitic tendencies now prevailing are limited to a small minority of the population.
Alderman Joseph Schubert greeted the gathering in the name of the city.
