Col. Herbert Lehman of New York City was selected as the Democratic Party’s candidate for the Lieutenant Governorship of the State of New York at the Democratic State Convention here today. Mr. Lehman had been prominently mentioned as one of the possible nominees as Democratic candidate for Governor. Franklin D. Roosevelt was chosen to head the party’s ticket.
Rabbi Philip Bernstein opened the Democratic State Convention here with a prayer.
The special correspondent of the New York “Day” at the Rochester envention reports interesting sidelights #### occurred in the nomination committee. According to the report, a heated fight proceeded the selection of the candidate for Lieutenaut Governor. John J. Raskob, chairman of the National Democratic Committee is reported to have proposed the son of Henry Morgenthau, former U. S. Ambassador to Turkey. At the intervention of some of the Jewish delegates to the Democratic convention, who pointed cut Mr. Morgenthau’s lack of popularity among New York Jews in connection with his anti-Zionist views and his report on the anti-Jewish pogroms in Poland, his son’s candidacy was discarded. Friends of Nathan Straus, Jr. renewed the boom for him for this post and Congressman Meyer Jacobstein was also a strong contender, ## to the report. Congressman Jacobstein introduced Governor Smith to the convention.
