United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold announced yesterday that he has appointed Alfred G. Katzin, a South African, to over-all charge of UN security, protocol and press relations during the early part of the UN General Assembly session. During this period Soviet Premier Khrushchev and other heads of state will be present.
Col. Katzin, 54 years old, is a Jew who was educated at Diocesan College, Rondebosch, South Africa. During World War II he served on active duty in East Africa, Egypt, the Middle East and North Africa, and later was attached to the Allied military headquarters for the Balkans. He has been on the staff of the United Nations since 1948. He has been active head of the UN Office of Public Information, a deputy undersecretary and, in 1956-1957, special assistant to Mr. Hammarskjold for clearance of the Suez Canal. He has also carried out, over the years, many other special assignments for the Secretary General.
