The Palestine War Savings campaign was opened here today by High Commissioner Sir Harold MacMichael, in the presence of 150 leading representatives of the Arab and Jewish communities. Sir Harold stated that the campaign had the two-fold purpose of absorbing surplus cash and of aiding the Allied war effort. S. S. Hoofien, head of the Anglo-Palestine bank, who spoke on behalf of the Jewish community, promised its full cooperation, but expressed the opinion that it would be difficult for Jews to save any funds in view of the sky-high living costs. He also stated that he wondered “if in view of present happenings,” the Jewish contribution to the war effort was really appreciated.
