The first complete census of the world’s Hebrew manuscripts is now being made under the terms of a fellowship administered by Columbia’s Department of Semitic Languages, it was announced this week-end by Dr. John A. Krout, dean of Graduate Faculties.
Initial contributions from numerous individuals have been received to cover the first year’s work. It is expected that the project will take five years to tally an estimated 50,000 Hebrew manuscripts. Moshe Lutzki, who holds the degree of Bachelor of Literature from Oxford, has been appointed the first fellow to carry on research.
