Construction of the new Bnai Jeshurun Synagogue and the Jewish Community Center of Strawberry Mansion was begun yesterday in the presence of a large gathering, including many prominent Jews.
Among the speakers at the exercises were William M.Lewis, Judge of the Municipal Court, and Rabbi B.L. Levinthal. The new institution, of which Rabbi Abraham A. Neuman will be leader, will cost $400,000.
The cornerstone of a home for aged women was also laid yesterday. The new home will accommodate 800 guests and will cost approximately $80,000.
