Commissioner of Accounts David Hirshfield “regrets very much” that Henry H. Klein, a Deputy Commissioner of his, mixed in the controversy between Israel Zangwill and Samuel Untermyer.

“I regret very much”, Commissioner Hirshfield said, “that Henry H. Klein, a deputy in my office, has seen fit to enter, under his official title, the controversy between Zangwill and Untermyer. Mr. Klein does not in any way represent views similar to mine. In my opinion, it is unfortunate for Zionism that in this controversy persons are injecting themselves who have never studied Jewish history, and never read the Old Testament. They have no interest in Judaism and simply plunge into the controversy for whatever publicity they can get out of it”.
