The forced retirement of Prof. William E. Kniek.arbcoker as chairman of the Romance Language Department of City College of New York was urged today by two atudent committees which charged him with anti-Semitic bias.
The committees–one representing the college’s atudent council and the other the executive council of the B’nai B’rith Hillal Foundation at CCNY–also recommanded that two Jewish students who were runners-up for an award given to the best student in the Romancs Language Department be deslared the winners of the prize on the basis of their marks, which were higher than those of the two non-Jewish winners.
The investigation, which grew out of charges of anti-Semitism filed against knickerbooker in April, 1949, also disclosed that virtually no Jews have been appointed to Knickerbooker’s department since he was named chairman, although previously about one-third of the instructors were Jews.
