The Washington Jewish Community Council said in a statement today that it had been in constant communication with law enforcement agencies with reference to the anti-Semitic propaganda activities of George Lincoln Rockwell and his “American Nasi Party” and had found the District of Columbia authorities “deeply concerned.”
The Council said that both the District and Federal authorities “have the situation under active investigation.” It pointed out that distribution of leaflets by Rockwell’s group did not violate any law, nor did his solicitation of funds since the local ordinance applied only to “charitable” not “political” solicitations.
The statement characterized published reports of the Rockwell group’s activities as “gross exaggerations.” It asserted that Rockwell “has no substantial following or any financial resources to speak of.” Washington Jewish leaders, it said, continue alert to Rockwell’s activities but “the Jewish community as a whole has had little or no occasion to feel disturbed or alarmed. Rockwell is avid for publicity. It would be ill-advised and a disservice to the Jewish community to take any steps that would afford him such publicity or the public platform he so desperately seeks.”
