A plan to replace the Yiddish alphabet by the Latin is now being discussed by leading Jewish Communists here. Those who favor the plan emphasize the fact that the Hebrew characters create difficulties in mass education, especially now when the Russian alphabet is also to be replaced by the Latin.
Those opposing the change point out that only a small percentage of the Jews in Russia know the Latin characters and that therefore substituting the Hebrew alphabet by the Latin would mean that most Jews would be deprived of the possibility of reading and writing.
