The Congregation Hop of Israel, 876 Gerard Avenue near East 161st Street, is planning the erection of a community center in the neighborhood of its present location. Dr. Samuel Benjamin has been elected rabbi of the Congregation and executive director of the building fund campaign.
Befor a large crowd which filled the synagogue to capacity recently, Dr. Benjamin pointed out the need for a center.
“A conservative estimate,” he stated, puts the number of the Jewish population in our neighborhood at 50,000. There has been a long felf want for an institution with adequate facilities to satisfy the religious, educational and social requirements of this multitude. The new center which we hope to have ready in time for next Jewis High Holy Days will contain a synagogue, six clasrooms, an auditorium for social activities and dramatic presentations, and several club and meeting rooms.”
Samuel L. Miller, president of the Congregation, is chairman of the building fund campaign. The estimated cost of the structure is $150,000.
