The Jerusalem District Court today sentenced Uri Winter, a member of the Communist Party of Israel and military columnist of the party organ, Voice of the People, to six years’ imprisonment for “noting down military secrets from an Israel Army sergeant named Reicher.”
The defendant maintained that the information was intended for use in a Parliamentary debate. Reicher was sentenced earlier to ten years’ imprisonment by a military court.
Winter, who came here 14 years ago from Czechoslovakia, was planning to be married and the sentencing judge said that “it is hard to sentence a young man about to marry, but the state’s seourity must take precedence over any other consideration.”
