Simon E. Sobeloff of Baltimore will be named early next month Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals of Maryland, the first Jew to hold this post, it was announced here by Governor Theodore R. McKeldin addressing the 24th annual meeting of the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
A national campaign goal of $3,500,000 to finance the activities of the Conference for 1953 was adopted. Dr. Everett Clinchy was re-elected president, and the following three co-chairmen were also renamed: Benson Ford, Thomas E. Braniff and Rogert W. Strauss. Jewish speakers at the conference included Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver, Rabbi Louis Finkelstein, Rabbi Maurice N. Eisendrath and David Sarnoff.
President Truman received in absentia a gold medallion awarded by the Conference for his services as honorary national chairman of Brotherhood Week. The conference released a telegram from President-elect Eisenhower accepting honorary chairmanship for 1953.
