The Standing Committee of the Conference of European Rabbis today condemned the attempt last week by the Soviet delegation to the United Nations to bracket Zionism with Nazism and anti-Semitism.
In a statement adopted at the Committee’s semi-annual meeting here, the rabbinical organization said it was “dismayed” by the Soviet proposal which, it said, “conflicts with moral and ethical values.” “To list Zionism with anti-Semitism and Nazism whose diabolical philosophy resulted in the destruction of millions of human beings is a misrepresentation of the essence of Zionism and an offense to any liberal-minded person.”
The Committee also approved the affiliation of various other religious bodies to constitute the Conference of European Rabbis and Associated Religious Organizations. Among those attending the meeting, under the chairmanship of Chief Rabbi Israel Brodie of England, were Grand Rabbi N. R. Dreyfuss of Belgium; Rabbi H. Grunewald of West Germany; Chief Rabbi Jacob Kaplan of France; Chief Rabbi A. Schuster of the Netherlands; Chief Rabbi Elio Toaff of Rome and Grand Rabbi H. Chilli of Paris.
