What was said to be the first movement of its kind in American Jewry was begun last week when trustees of reform, orthodox and conservative congregations here united in an effort to launch a campaign to increase Jewish affiliations here. At the meeting the Boards of Trustees of Temple Israel, Far Rock-away; Temple Beth El, Cedarhurst, and Congregation Shaaray Tefila, Far Rockaway, unanimously approved a campaign to stimulate the Jews of the Rockaways to become affiliated with some Jewish religious organization.
Leo J. Goldberger was chosen permanent Chairman of the “J###-a-Synagogue” campaign. Mr. Goldberger said that more than 1,500 Jewish families in the section from Hewlett to Far Rockaway are not affiliated with any synagogue.Alvin Austin Silberman, Chairman of the Committee on Public Information for the drive, announced that efforts are under way to interest children in writing essays for the children’s contest on the subject of “Why My Parents Should Join a Synagogue,” and that literature outlining the contest was distributed at the synagogues during the holiday services.
A general Executive Committee to direct the campaign was elected.
