Resolutions aimed at strengthening Yiddish cultural work throughout the free world were adopted here yesterday at the closing session of a four-day world congress for Jewish culture. The parley also issued a manifesto calling for observance of a “week of Yiddish culture” to be observed all over the world. It made an appeal to the Soviet Union to cease the suppression of Jewish culture and to permit Soviet Jews to emigrate to be reunited with their families abroad.
Delegates from 12 countries, including Israel, attended the congress which heard reports on the state of Yiddish in Israel, Latin America and other countries. A feature of the congress was the presentation of the H. Leivick 1969 prize for literature to Aaron Zeitlin, the poet.
