Both Houses of Congress have unanimously adopted identical resolutions commending the 1972 American Olympic team and swimmer Mark Andrew Spitz in particular for their performances at the 20th Olympiad in Munich. The resolutions devote the first of their two paragraphs to Spitz who is “commended for the individual excellence, skill and perseverance” in becoming the first Olympic contestant ever to win seven gold medals in one Olympiad and earned the “recognition of being the outstanding Olympian of modern times.”
