The Fifth Congress of Italian Jewish Communities opened here today with delegates from 23 different Italian Jewish communities participating. The congress is held every five years.
Sen. Ugo della Seta, one of the speakers at the opening session, called for stricter adherence to the Italian constitutional guarantees of religious freedom for minorities. Dante Lattes, renowned Jewish scholar and vice-president of the Union said that the greatest danger to the Jews today was their ignorance of the moral and spiritual values of Judaism.
The congress was greeted by Harold Trobe, director of the Joint Distribution Committee in Italy, who pledged his agency’s assistance to Italian Jewry’s cultural, social and religious activities. Gerhardt Riegner, World Jewish Congress representative reported on Jewish emigration from North Africa. Ambassador Eliahu Sasson brought Israel’s greetings to the delegates.
