Hearings in both Houses of Congress on bills to establish temporary havens in the United States, which were scheduled for yesterday, were postponed at the last moment.
In the House, hurrying to adjourn in time for the national political conventions in Chicago, committees were requested to call off all business, so that members should attend. The House Immigration and Naturalization Committee complied by cancelling hearings on “free ports.”
In the Senate, hearings before the Foreign Relations Committee on the Gillette bill to provide temporary detention care for Jewish and other refugees at Ellis Island or at special reception centers were postponed at the request of Senator Gillette.
