A sub-committee on foreign economic policy today urged in a report to the House Foreign Affairs Committee that the United States “vigorously support and encourage efforts to obtain free transit through the Suez Canal of persons and goods coming to and from Israel. “
Rep. J, L.Pilcher, Georgia Democrat, served as chairman of the bi-partisan subcommittee which visited Israel and a number of other nations. While describing some United States aid projects benefiting various nations as ineffective and excessively costly, the report described Israel’s economic progress as impressive.
Subcommittee members expressed a view that too much was being given to other nations with too little results. Primary concentration on food production and education was urged.
