Hearings were opened here today by a special labor subcommittee of the House of Representatives, on a fair employment practices bill; Dr. Joachim Prinz, president of the American Jewish Congress, and representatives of other Jewish groups are scheduled to testify at the hearings.
The bill provides for the creation of an independent commission, to be appointed by the President, with authority to order employers to stop any discriminatory hiring practices; The bill would bar employment discriminations due to race, color, religion, sex or age; The subcommittee’s hearings are scheduled to continue all week.
Congressman Herbert Zelenko, a New York Democrat, said today he will introduce legislation this week that would deny occupancy licenses or any other permits required to do business here to any establishment which practices or advocates racial or religious discrimination; He said his proposed legislation stems from the disclosure last week that the exclusive Cosmos Club here has reportedly refused to accept the membership applications of two Negroes.
