An estimated 100,000 displaced persons may be denied admission to the United States owing to the expiration of the DP Immigration Act on June 30, 1951, Rep. Abraham J. Nulter of New York warned Congress yesterday. He estimated that by the and of June only 220,000 of the authorized 341,000 DP’s will have arrived in this country.
The New York Congressman also introduced a resolution to extend admissions under the DP Act until all DP’s who make application by June 30 whall have received consideration. He cited figures which indicated that some 20 percent of the immigrants who entered the U.S. under the act were Jewish, while 45 percent were Catholics and 34 percent Protestant.
Meanwhile, a joint committee of the House and Senate opened hearings yesterday on an attempt to codify all the immigration laws, rules and executive orders issued since 1798. It is expected that the hearings will run from two to three weeks.
