Two bills considerably widening civil rights legislation in Connecticut awaited signature by Gov. Abe Ribicoff today following their passage by the State Senate. Both had previously cleared the House of Representatives with strong bi-partisan support.
The first measure extends the anti-discrimination law to private housing of five or more living units and makes it an offense to discriminate in sale or rental of such property on grounds of race, religion or color.
The second measure, unanimously adopted by fee State Senate, gives the State Civil Rights Commission the authority to initiate complaints in violations of the Public Accommodations Act. Previously, the commission could not act until it received a complaint.
