Delegates to the biennial convention of the United Synagogue of America, the congregational arm of Conservative Judaism, decided today to reconvene for a final session in Jerusalem next May 31.
The biennial convention will end here Thursday on schedule. The final session in Jerusalem will follow immediately after the three-day conference of the World Council of Synagogues with which the United Synagogue is affiliated.
The principal speaker today was Binyamin Eliav, Israel’s Consul General in New York, who told the 1,200 delegates that Israel needs American Jews “not only as tourists but as the bearers of your ideas. We need the freshness of your approach, which is so ingenious in maintaining traditional Judaism in a way that conforms with modern life.”
The delegates in a resolution urged the United States Government to make inquiries of the Soviet Union as to the basis of the arrests and sentences of Jewish community leaders in Moscow and Leningrad under circumstances suggesting they were being persecuted as Jews.
