The Association of American and Canadian Immigrants closed its tenth annual convention last night with a decision to establish a unit of overseas members preparing to immigrate to Israel under an association program. The program provides for such immigrants to spend part of their time in kibbutzim and part in urban centers.
Another action was a resolution criticizing the Jewish Agency for “consistently failing in its commitments to aid Western aliyah.” The resolution called on the Israel Government to establish a coordinating group to deal with the problems of such immigration. Gerald Selbst, chairman of the association’s mortgage committee, said that because the Jewish Agency had not participated in mortgage financing, the association had not been able to keep its promises to some newcomers from Western countries.
Ruth Ukstein of Philadelphia, a former lieutenant in the WAVES, was elected national president.
