An appeal for approval of a resolution supporting President Kennedy, “who is valiantly battling to uphold the principle and practice of separation between Church and State,” was voiced here today by Rabbi Maurice N. Eisendrath, president of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations.
Dr. Eisendrath made his appeal in his keynote address to the 46th biennial convention of the UAHC, which will hold six days of deliberations. More than 3,500 delegates and visitors from 630 Reform temples are attending the assembly.
Pointing out that all but a small handful of Jewish groups have opposed Federal aid to parochial schools, Rabbi Eisendrath deplored the fact that “even an insignificant minority in the American Jewish community, tempted by the prospect of financial relief for their famished educational budgets, join those who greedily clamor for Federal aid to Christian parochial or Jewish day schools.”
He called on the assembly to meet “this threat to the very fundaments of our nation” by supporting President Kennedy’s opposition to the granting of Federal funds for such purposes.
