The cornerstone was laid here yesterday for Sholom Aleichem House, named for the famous Yiddish writer, in ceremonies attended by President Shazar and presided over by President Eliahu Elath of the Hebrew University.
President Shazar expressed the hope that the new House would became a world center for lovers of Jewish literature. Other speakers were Meyer Brown, honorary president of the Farband Labor Zionist Order, Chaim Grade, American Jewish writer, and Gross Zimmerman, a noted Jewish writer in Israel.
Among those honored with invitations to place the first cement in the ceremony were Mikhail Bodrov, the Soviet Ambassador to Israel, and the writer J. D. Berkovits, son-in-law of Sholom Aieichem. The help of the Histadrut campaign in the United States and of Farband in initiating the new House was hailed at the ceremony.
