Ground was broken yesterday for an eight-story B’nai B’rith House here which president Label Katz said would become a center of solidarity and fraternity for all Jews. Thousands of members of the various B’nai B’rith lodges in Israel and many guests attended the ceremony. Mayor Mordecal Namir and Tel Aviv Chief Rabbi Isar Unterman brought greetings.
The first stage of construction of the B’nai B’rith House will be financed by $250,000 received from members in the United States. The new house will be situated in the new Tel Aviv cultural center near the Sokolow House, the Physicians House, the Lawyers House, the ZOA House and the Frederic Mann Auditorium.
Mr. Katz announced that there would be an annual B’nai B’rith pilgrimage to Israel. Some 200 members will visit Israel in March in the next pilgrimage. Other speakers included Abba Eban, minister without portfolio and former Israel Ambassador to the United States, and Ogden Reid, American Ambassador to Israel whose comments, given entirely in Hebrew, where received with thunderous applause.
CORRECTION: In our report yesterday on the new headquarters of the Jewish Agency In New York it was stated that the offices of the United Jewish Appeal will be located in the new premises. It is the United Israel Appeal–not the United Jewish Appeal–which will have its offices there.
