Cosmetics and wholesale drug merchants, organized into a special trade division of the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies, were at work yesterday mobilizing contributions for the present $2,071,000 emergency campaign of Federation.
“The $10,000 quota to which this division stands pledged is moderate in view of the extent and importance of our industry and the precarious situation of Federation’s finances,” said B. E. Levy, chairman of this division, at a luncheon meeting at the Empire State Club.
“Each member of the division, as well as such additional colleagues as we can draw into the work, must spare no effort from this day to the end of the campaign.”
Paul Felix Warburg, another speaker at the meeting, said the emergency drive was the result of a precipitate drop in income, coupled with the exhaustion of all reserves.
“The huge deficit of $2,071,000 must be met,” he asserted, “or our institutions will be forced to curtail their most elementary services.”
More than 5,000 children of Jewish religious and Sabbath schools in Manhattan and The Bronx will participate in the annual mass lesson in philanthropy to be presented through an elaborate pageant on the stage of the Roxy Theatre December 18 under the auspices of the young men’s and women’s division of the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies, it was announced yesterday afternoon. Governor Lehman is among the sponsors of the event.
