The American Council for Judaism, an anti-Zionist group, charged today that the Arab countries were “serving Zionist aims” by attacking the statement of the Ecumenical Council absolving the Jewish people of the charge of deicide and condemning anti-Semitism.
The charge was voiced by Rabbi Elmer Berger, executive vice-president. He welcomed the clarification by the Ecumenical Council of the position of the Catholic Church on Jews and the crucifixion of Jesus and pointed out that “the historic religious-theological document clearly intended no political implications,” as the Arabs assert.
“The Arab linking of all Jews to the Israel-Zionist sovereignty is inconsistent with previous Arab statements that their political quarrels with Zionism and the State of Israel are not coextensive with those citizens of Jewish faith in many countries who reject Zionism’s alleged political-national identification of all Jews with the State of Israel,” Rabbi Berger said.
