The 70th anniversary biennial convention of the National Council of Jewish Women opened here today with 700 delegates from all parts of the country representing 123,000 members. The convention is scheduled to last five days.
Senator Hubert H, Humphrey, addressing the opening session, cited Israel for its “magnificent” technical assistance programs to Latin America, emphasizing that this form of aid can serve as an example to be followed by the Western Powers, including the United States.
The Minnesota Democrat, who is chairman of the Senate’s Disarmament Subcommittee of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, called particular attention to Israel’s recent announcement to train 200 Latin American students in modern agricultural methods this year, in augmenting its technical assistance programs in Brazil, Ecuador, Bolivia and Colombia. By the “shining example” of its own success, Senator Humphrey said, “Israel can give the people of Latin America a dimension of hope which is not confined to the power of dollars and supplies. “
In a message to Mrs. Charles Hymes, president of the NCJW, President Kennedy lauded the group for having “vigorously supported every major social welfare program in recent years.” Mrs. Hymes told the opening session that the Council’s 70-year-old history has been one of strong commitment “to human welfare everywhere.”
