An 18-point program of action by volunteers throughout the country toward improvement of employment opportunities for all youth was launched here today by the National Council of Jewish Women. Announcement of the program was made by the organization’s national president, Mrs. Charles Hymes; of Minneapolis, as the NCJW opened its annual convention, at the Barbizon Plaza Hotel here.
Mrs. Hymes called on the organization’s 329 local units across the country “to bring key community groups together for joint planning to meet the emergency.” A “massive effort,” she said, is needed “to modernize and extend vocational guidance and training” for youth which, a Council study has shown, “is inadequate and outmoded.” According to Mrs. Hymes, 57 local sections of the country have already conducted surveys of the situation in their areas.
Miss Hannah Stein, executive director of the NCJW, told today’s session of the convention that “extreme rightism” is becoming a “more serious threat to individual liberty in this country than McCarthyism was.” The convention will be in session for the rest of the week.
