The Leo Baeck Institute for Jewish culture and scholarship was opened here today at a ceremony attended by Dr. Max Gruenwald, president of the American Federation of Jews from Central Europe, and Dr. Rudolf Callmann, chairman of the board of the federation. The organization is the American branch of the Council of Jews from Germany which opened the center with funds obtained from German reparations monies paid to the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany.
The institute is named for Dr. Leo Baeck president of the Council of Jews from Germany and one-time Chief Rabbi of Berlin. During the war the Nazis threw Dr. Baeck into a concentration camp where he was rescued by American troops in 1945. Dr. Baeck resides now in Britain.
