Commodore. It rejected in principle the resolution adopted by a conference held in Geneva in 1932 and again Basle in 1934, under the leadership of Dr. Wise and Dr. Nachum Goldmann of Paris that a World Jewish Congress must be forced to “deal with all questions of Jewish life and to represent the Jewish people in a struggle for its civil and national rights.”

In a message to Mr. Deutsch declining his invitation, Mrs. Brin scored the methods of the Congress leaders. She declared, “I am replying to your letter of December 6, inviting me to appoint representatives to a National Board of Elections which is to take charge of the election of delegates to a session of the American Jewish Congress to be held in April, 1935. Our board has given the matter earnest and careful consideration, and we are forced to decline.

“Your invitation to participate in a National Board of Elections to supervise the electing of delegates to a meeting of the American Jewish Congress can in no wise be construed as an attempt to unite American Jewry in a joint effort to consider its problems since the purpose and program of the meeting are fairly well defined in advance. The mere supervision of the election is the concern of the American Jewish Congress alone. There is no reason for the N. C. J. W., which is an independent organization, to participate.

“We doubt very much that the election you propose can be a fair and effective way of obtaining the wisest and most representative leadership, and we moreover are not in accord with the convening of a World Congress, which is the main purpose for the calling of this election.”
