The Legislative Council which the Palestine government is anxious to establish in this country will also deal with questions of immigration land sales, it was reported today in the Arab paper Al Balag. The final authority on these two matters will, however, rest with the High Commissioner of Palestine, the report states.
Should the report in the Arab paper turn out to be true, it would mean that Sir Arthur Wauchope has decided to extend the powers of the projected Legislative Council. During his negotiations with various groups last year, Sir Arthur gave definite assurance that the Legislative Council would not be authorized to deal with matters concerning immigration and land sales.
With the growing determination of the High Commissioner to establish the Legislative Council under all circumstances, the opposition to its establishment is growing on the part of Jewish leaders here.
It becomes clearer every day that not a single group in the Jewish community here will consider sending representatives to the Legislative Council. It is expected that the solid and unanimous will of world Jewry against the establishment of the Council will be demmonstrated at the forthcoming World. Zionist Congress, which opens in Lucerne on August 20.
