A technical committee of the General Assembly agreed here today that the UN Congress on Crime and the Treatment of Offenders, which was scheduled to open in Toronto, Canada, on Sept. 1, should not be postponed. Members of the committee decided to resume deliberations tomorrow and to decide on a new site for the conference. At today’s meeting, Geneva or Vienna were suggested as alternate sites.
Last week the Canadian government announced its decision to postpone the congress after a strong campaign was launched by Jewish organizations and public officials against the participation of the Palestine Liberation Organization in the conference. UN officials said today that the world body has major office complexes in Vienna and Geneva and it will be possible to accommodate the conference in either of these cities. Some 2000 delegates are expected to attend the parley.
