A shortage of housing accommodations for Jews was expected today to take catastrophic proportions as a campaign against Jewish tenants spread to the outskirts of Vienna. Hundreds of Jewish families, particularly those living in Jewish-owned houses, were notified to vacate in from 24 hours to two months.
The orders to vacate were issued for the large part by Nazi district leaders and enforced by the “Aryan” managements of Jewish properties. The campaign is particularly ruthless in the outlying districts of Sievering and Hietzing, and also the Taborstrasse and the Jewish district of the Ringstrasse.
Indications are that the Jewish Community’s Goldschmidt Foundation building, from which Jewish organizations were evicted, has been taken over by Chancellor Hitler’s El te Guards.
Acute conditions are foreseen by informed quarters if the campaign continues, since the vacated tenants are not accepted by “Aryan” houses and the Jewish quarter is overcrowded. Technically the campaign is illegal since the Austrian tenancy law provides for unlimited lease.
All Jewish shops in Innsbruck have been forced to display on their windows yellow signs reading, “Jewish Enterprise,” which are to remain permanently.
