The young advertising executive, youthful and energetic, spared few in his onslaught. He said that Max Winkler, head of the boycott committee of the American Jewish Congress, is “attempting to do good work.” What stands in his way, he insisted, is the “apathy of the people who think they are helping him.”
He urged that American Jewish leaders “cease their quibbling” and “get down to real business.” Making the suggestion that these leaders, including Samuel Untermyer, Stephen S. Wise, Nathan Straus, Jr., Bernard Deutsch, etc., organize and prosecute a boycott that will be “compelling and inclusive,” Mr. Hirschmann criticized what seems to him to be “a kind of happy hysteria” on the part of Jewry. He said that he meant that “as a parlor-room topic of conversation, the German situation is becoming trite.”
