The Israel Treasury announced today new regulations reducing or eliminating customs duties and easing of purchase taxes on a wide range of products brought from other countries by Israeli residents returning from a minimum stay of two years abroad.
The new regulations, which apply to Israelis leaving Israel for such visits after next January 1, provide that refrigerators, freezers, tape-recorders, washing machines, cooking ranges, food mixers and radiogramaphones brought back by such travelers will be subject to customs but free of purchase tax whether new or used. Television sets will be subject to half the combined customs and purchase taxes.
The right of such returning residents to tax benefits on overseas-made vehicles, however, has been completely canceled. Typewriters, cameras, portable radios and binoculars will be completely free of such taxes. The regulations will be modified for the benefit of students returning after only 22 months abroad.
