Damrosch Resigns As Philharmonic Conductor

Walter Damrosch will resign from the New York Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, according to an announcement by Clarence H. Mackay, chairman of the board of directors. Ossip Gabrilowitsch and Fritz Reiner will likewise resign as conductors.

Neither Mr. Reiner nor Mr. Gabriloitsch, who appeared this season as guest conductors, is mentioned in Mr. Mackay’s statement. But it cites correspondence with Mr. Damrosch. On April 10. according to the quotations. Mr. Mackay wrote to the former leader of the New York Symphony Orchestra asking to what extent his services would be available next season. Mr. Damrosch replied on April 12 that owing to other commitments, especially in connection with the radio, it would be impossible for him to accept any engagements with the Philharmonic.
