The Lithuanian Ministry for the Interior is demanding that all persons in possession of internal passports which have not been issued on the production of birth certificates must supply documentary proof of their birth in Lithuania. As large numbers of birth certificates were destroyed during the war, it is impossible for many of the Jews in Lithuania to prove that they were born in the country. In many places the registers have been burnt or otherwise destroyed. There is a danger that thousands of Jews in the country may be expelled because of inability to comply with the demand of the Ministry.
