Daniel Auster, Jerusalem’s first mayor after the establishment of Israel, died last night at the age of 69.
Born in Austria, he came to Palestine in 1923, was elected a member of the Jerusalem City Council for the first time in 1934 and then served as deputy mayor and acting mayor under the British Mandate in the mixed Jewish-Arab City Council.
He was one of the signers of the Israel Declaration of Independence and a member of the Provisional National Council in 1948. Among various public posts he filled were the presidency of the Society for the United Nations and, more recently, Consul General in Jerusalem for Thailand.
